The client

Chelmsford Theatre is the city’s cultural and entertainment hub. Run by Chelmsford City Council, they provide a jam-packed programme covering comedy, theatre, live music, dance, talks, and their cherished annual panto. Recently rebranded and refurbished, 2023 has been about re-energising and reconnecting the city’s cultural heart with its community.

The Task

To build upon their existing collection of inventive C-shaped (for Chelmsford) icons, which act as eye-catching wayfinders and promotional tools across digital and printed media.

Rooted in the ‘real world’, the idea behind the creative was to find fresh and playful ways for the theatre to draw attention to their diverse offering and begin conversations with new and existing audiences.

What we delivered:

We created a dynamic suite of C designs and supplied each with a set of different brand colour backgrounds in various formats, for maximum versatility.

The first seven designs included:

  • Steampunk Cogs
  • A Lego block
  • An arch made of balls
  • A woollen toy
  • Sunflowers
  • A Christmas balloon Arch
  • A gingerbread biscuit

“We commissioned TGDH to create a number of assets to complement our recent rebrand and logo. We wanted the assets to be striking, able to standalone and be recognisable among our existing recent creations. Tom and the team came up with some imaginative ideas that we hadn’t previously thought of and adapted well to our many requests as the project evolved. We’re excited to be able to use the new assets to promote our brand and theatre.”
